Why We Shoot Without Sights

If you walk into a modern Olympic archery range, you’ll see bows that look like spaceships—covered in stabilizers, clickers, and high-tech magnifying sights. But at The Valkyrie’s Nest, we do things differently.

We practice Instinctive Archery.

If you’ve ever wondered why we choose traditional wooden bows over modern gadgets, or what "instinctive" actually means, this is for you.

What is Instinctive Archery?

Think about how you throw a ball to a friend. You don’t stop to calculate the wind speed, measure the distance in meters, or use a mechanical sight to aim your hand. You simply look at the target, and your brain coordinates your muscles to make it happen.

That is instinctive archery. By stripping away the sights and stabilizers, we rely on the incredible connection between the eye, the brain, and the body.

Why We Teach This Way at The Nest

Shooting "barebow" isn't just a nod to history; it offers unique benefits that modern archery often misses:

Mental Focus: Without a sight to rely on, you have to be 100% present. It forces a level of mindfulness that calms the "chatter" in the brain.

Adaptability: This is the foundation of Mounted Archery. When you are on a moving horse, you don’t have time to fiddle with a sight. You have to feel the shot.

Pure Fun: There is a unique satisfaction in "finding the center" using nothing but your own intuition.

Perfect for the Next Generation

This is also why our Kids Instinctive Archery Club is so popular. Instead of teaching children to rely on a piece of plastic to tell them where to aim, we teach them to trust themselves. It builds a brand of confidence that they carry off the range and into their daily lives.

Whether you are aiming at a gold ring on a boss or one of our 3D foam animals in the indoor range, the goal is the same: stop overthinking, and start shooting.
